A New Eritrean talent Joins Wanty-ReUz-Technord
Wanty-ReUz-Technord proudly announces the addition of Mewael Girmay, an 18-year-old Eritrean cyclist, to its Continental Development team. Under the direction of Kévin Van Melsen, Mewael is set to make his debut in competition on March 3rd.
Mewael, the younger brother of Biniam Girmay, a member of Intermarché-Wanty World Team since 2021, brings his cycling prowess to the team. Biniam Girmay made history as the first Sub Saharan African rider to win a classic in Ghent-Wevelgem 2022 and a Grand Tour stage in the Giro d’Italia of 2022. Mewael joins the Walloon structure as its fourth African rider, alongside Aklilu Arefayne, Biniam Girmay, and South-African climber Louis Meintjes.
Hailing from Asmara, Mewael is a tall rider with a profile suited for sprints and classics. He participated in his first European race last Saturday at the GP Raygeo in Villers-le-Temple. His official debut with Wanty-ReUz-Technord will be at the GP de Lillers, a UCI 1.2 event, on March 3rd.
Expressing his excitement, Mewael shared, “I started cycling around three years ago, inspired by my brother Biniam and the Tour de France. Last week I arrived in Belgium, and my dream came true.” Despite facing challenges adapting to the cold and wet weather.
Mewael is motivated to succeed and appreciates the support of the team.
Kévin Van Melsen, the Sports Director, highlighted Mewael’s potential for classics and sprinting, citing his similarities to his brother Biniam. The team aims to support Mewael, offering favorable conditions for his development.
Mewael’s journey is expected to contribute to the broader goal of fostering young African talents in cycling and enhancing the sport’s development on the continent. The team anticipates positive results from Mewael Girmay’s participation in future competitions.
