Adulis Excavation: Ancient Ceramics Uncovered
“Asmara Unearths Ancient Ceramics at Adulis: Linking Historical Eras from 1500 to 500 BC”
Archaeologists at the Adulis site in Eritrea have uncovered ceramics shedding light on historical stages from 1500 to 500 BC. Dr. Tsegay Medin, project coordinator, highlighted the significance of this find, bridging historical periods from the 1st to the 7th decades.
The excavation project, initiated in 2011 through Eritrean and Italian collaboration, has unearthed various ceramic artifacts spanning different historical epochs. Dr. Medin stressed the potential of this discovery to enrich the region’s history through thorough research.
Prof. Serena Massa, an Italian archaeologist, highlighted Adulis as Sub-Saharan Africa’s sole ancient town built with stones, holding significant international historical importance. She suggested that Adulis’s artifacts could link its civilization to that of Punt Land, sparking a new phase of excavation.
Archaeologist Dr. Abraham Zere believes this discovery will deepen our understanding of ancient civilizations in the Horn of Africa and the Southern Red Sea region. The ongoing Adulis project exemplifies fruitful collaboration between Eritrean and Italian experts.
