“Asmara: A City of Unity, Beauty, and Resilience”
Asmara, Eritrea’s capital, has a fascinating history. Starting as four villages that later joined forces, it has grown into a bustling city known for its unique architecture. Perched 2325 meters above sea level, Asmara earned a UNESCO heritage listing in 2017.
The city’s story began with four villages facing disagreements and external threats. United by women from these villages, they named it Arbaete Asmera, meaning “the four have united.” Archaeological findings show Asmara’s ancient roots, but it’s most famous for its Italian colonial-era architecture from the late 1800s.
Today, Asmara is admired for its modern beauty and well-designed buildings. Dr. Uschi Eid called it one of Africa’s most beautiful cities. Its charm extends to cultural expressions, with songs and poems celebrating the city and its cooperative culture.
Asmara values trust, making its streets safe day and night. Trust is crucial for peaceful coexistence. The city’s identity is captured in the phrase “Asmara Adi Kulu,” meaning “Asmara, home village of everyone.”
Despite historical challenges like foreign occupation, racial segregation, and military interests, Asmara stands as a safe, resilient, and welcoming city. Post-independence, efforts focus on rebuilding and preserving its infrastructure damaged during the war, ensuring Asmara remains a unique and beautiful place for everyone.
